Our App Development activity lets campers progress from users to actual builders of their own fully functional apps. In our activity, we use MIT App Inventor and other user-friendly software to introduce campers to app development. MIT App Inventor employs a simple click-and-drag programming language that lets campers develop and export various software projects as applications on different Android platforms.

Robotics

Campers are introduced to the basics of robotics while working hands-on with various robotic systems, including the LEGO MindstormsMindstorms NXT, and EV3 systems. Campers design and construct different robots and then use computers to teach them to move, react, and solve various challenges. We have developed a curriculum that takes campers through 3 different levels of robotics. These levels are:

  • Level I: Mindstorms
  • Level II: Mindstorms NXT
  • Level III: EV3

Campers will be introduced to SketchUp design software to create 3D projects. They will start by drawing lines and shapes. Then, they will learn how to use the push/pull tool to turn flat surfaces into 3D forms. Additionally, they will learn how to stretch, copy, rotate and paint. Scratch is a programming language used to create and share stories, games, cards, animations, and more with people all over the world. Scratch is free and was developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT. The code requires linking together colorful action blocks. Once campers learn the basics of the Scratch language by completing various projects, they will have all the skills they need to create a themed project of their choice.

Photo books tell a story in pictures and there are many online sites that can be used to create a book. Campers will use camp digital photos to upload and design their own photo book. They can be very creative and customize each page of their book using different photo layouts, background colors, clip art pictures, and more. TGA Premier Youth Tennis brings tennis onto elementary and middle school campuses across America through enrichment programs that incorporate physical activity, character development and academic-based lessons.  TGA conducts a five level skill development program for elementary and middle school aged students and a play-based program for middle school aged students through curriculums developed by TGA’s education experts and the United States Tennis Association (USTA).  TGA focuses on instilling a passion for tennis within each child while promoting advancement, achievement and the attainment of life skills that can be utilized on and off a tennis court. .

All TGA programs incorporate the following components:

  • Tennis instruction that is age-appropriate and effective
  • Character development lessons through our initiative “Play the Fair Way with TGA”
  • Physical education and fitness
  • Rules & Etiquette lessons
  • Academic lessons in math, science, history and English

Have you ever wanted to write, direct and edit your own movie? At New Horizons your dream is now a reality.

The New Horizons Movie Magic Program incorporates all aspects of film development. Your child will begin with some beginner film analysis and script writing. This encourages campers to be creative and craft their own unique vision into a real movie. Then, after campers have created a short screenplay they will work in groups to shoot their films. Once the film is shot, campers will use special editing software to fine tune their project. Upon completion, the entire camp will screen them at the New Horizons Day Camp Film Festival. Prizes are awarded for all aspects of film making, acting and directing.

Make model airplanes that really fly! Learn about aviation history and the physics that make modern flight possible. Enjoy this fun filled introduction to airplane parts, control surfaces, angles, forces and the metric system. Develop your knowledge and skills by working with a variety of tools and materials while discovering real-world applications that connect school studies with projects that are both challenging and fun! Every student builds a couple airplane models (or gliders) throughout the course, using balsa wood, styrofoam and paper, with other related activities to complete the experience. We encourage individual exploration, and will explain Bernoulli’s Principle, Newton’s Laws as well as many facets and forms of aviation both past and present (kites, dirigibles, hot air balloons, helicopters and rockets too). THIS SUMMER, LET’S MAKE SOME AIRPLANES!
